Chicago News

  • Leap Day Deals: It’s February 29! After today, you won’t be able to say that until 2028. To celebrate this extra day, many national and local Chicago businesses have decided to run freebies and surprisingly good discounts. Check out 29 deals in Chicago that you can snag on Leap Day today.

  • Tom Skilling: In what we are calling the biggest Chicago retirement since Michael Jordan, legendary WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling officially retired yesterday after an incredible 45-year run. Chicago’s weatherman has become an integral part of Chicago history and culture over the years and will be missed by many. Watch what he said during his final sign-off last night.

  • Extreme Weather: Was Tom Skilling’s final week of work one of the craziest that he ever covered in Chicago?! It certainly seemed like that was Mother Nature’s goal as the Chicagoland area experienced all four seasons in a matter of days this week. We started the week with everyone vibing at the lake but then things turned quickly with one of the biggest temperatures drops we’ve ever seen followed by a confirmed 11 tornadoes touching down in Illinois on Tuesday.

  • St. Patrick’s Day: March begins tomorrow, and that means all green everything is starting soon. Here are a couple great Chicago St. Patrick’s Day-themed March experiences to consider! First, this all-green bottomless brunch at Chief O’Neill’s will be available March 3, 10 and 24 (reservations). If you like afternoon tea, check out this special LondonHouse St. Patrick’s Day tea that will run through March (reservations).

  • Tulips: In a sign that spring is coming early, Chicago’s famous Michigan Ave. tulips have started to sprout from the dirt already. This is a full month earlier than their typical late-March emergence. As you may have guessed, the tulips are sprouting earlier this year due to the historically warm winter in Chicago. See what people are saying about it.

Just for Fun

  • Hunger Games: Did you hear about Wendy’s surge pricing? If you didn’t, everyone else did this week. Spoiler alert, that wasn’t a good thing for Wendy’s. Even Burger King took a shot at them. Long story short, the plan was to change menu prices in real time based on demand. People were so against it that Wendy’s quickly paused their plans after the backlash.

  • Pitchfork: One-day and three-day Pitchfork tickets just went on sale this morning. The music festival will take place July 19-21 in Union Park here in Chicago. Get pre-sale tickets.

  • The Bear: Did filming for season three of The Bear begin this week in Chicago?! Yes, Chef! We posted a video of Tina and Marcus arriving back in Chicago at O’Hare on Sunday night. They even stopped to sign autographs.
