Chicago’s Air Quality: There has been no bigger story this week than Chicago’s unhealthy air quality. You can’t go, or even just look, outside without noticing the smoke-filled air. ICYMI, they are saying that the Canadian wildfires are the cause. So just how bad is it? Well according to an expert, breathing Chicago’s air this week is like smoking half a pack of cigarettes.
Connor Bedard: The Chicago Blackhawks made 17 year old Connor Bedard the first overall pick in last night’s 2023 NHL Draft. The future face of the franchise is considered to be a “generational talent” that could turn the team’s fortunes around in a hurry. We attended the official Chicago Blackhawks watch party last night and recorded the moment that the draft pick was announced.
Grocery Tax: The price of your groceries are going up starting tomorrow as the Illinois 1% grocery tax suspension comes to an end. The temporary suspension goes back into effect on July 1 along with a slew of new laws like a minimum wage hike in Chicago.
NASCAR Chicago: Downtown Chicago’s first ever NASCAR race will take place this weekend with the Grant Park 220 race happening on Sunday at 4pm. Take a glimpse at what it will look like to drive around the track one time through Grant Park. The real race will be 100 laps, which may take a while. For NASCAR fans looking to buy a six pack of Busch Light to drink while they watch, it’s going to set them back a bit.
Faster Trains: Speaking of a need for speed, Amtrak just launched a higher-speed service between Chicago and St. Louis this week. Prior to Monday, the train could only reach a max speed of 90 mph. That has now been increased to 110 mph thanks to upgraded tracks from a nearly $2 billion infrastructure project. Take a guess at how much faster this makes the train ride between the two cities before you look at the answer.
