Chicago News
Dave Matthews Band: Exactly 20 years ago today, Chicago experienced one of its most infamous incidents of all time. That of course would be when the Dave Matthews Band tour bus dumped 800 pounds of fecal matter off the Kinzie Street Bridge onto a passing by tour boat below. Benny the Bull paid his respects this morning.
Ducky Derby: Speaking of pouring things into the Chicago River, Chicago’s cutest annual tradition took place yesterday afternoon as 100,000 rubber duckies were dumped into the river off the Columbus Bridge. This fun event helps raise money for the Special Olympics of Illinois.
Christkindlmarket: It was announced this week that the Wrigleyville Christkindlmarket will not be happening this year (Daley Plaza and Aurora locations will remain). This is in part due to the NHL Winter Classic game being held at Wrigley Field, in addition to other scheduled programming. Chicago’s Polar Express tradition also won’t return this holiday season.
8pm Sunsets: Not to pile on the sad news, but last night was Chicago’s last 8pm, or later, sunset until May 11, 2025. For those wondering, that is 277 days away. The good news though is that we will still have 7pm or later sunsets in Chicago through Sept. 14!
Weekend Plans: The Chicago Air & Water Show is by far the biggest event taking place this weekend, but there are plenty of other fun things going on around the city as well including the Bud Billiken Parade, Northalsted Market Days, Printer’s Row Art Fest and more.

Just For Fun
Secret River Concert: A secret river concert with local Chicago bands is taking place this Sunday, Aug. 11 underneath the Belmont Ave Bridge. We checked it out last weekend. Take a look!
Mariah Carey: The Queen of Christmas will be putting on her biggest holiday tour to date, and she is making a stop in Rosemont on Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Aug. 9.
Chicago Olympics: The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are soon coming to a close, which got us thinking… what oddly specific things would Chicagoans win gold medals in? Hint: dumping things in the river is one of them.
Portillo’s: Do we think Portillo’s would do the catering for a Chicago Olympics? The popular Chicago restaurant chain released an Instagram post this morning teasing that “your next flavor obsession is coming” on Aug. 27. We have no idea what it will be.
Poll Question of the Week
Which Christkindlmarket location do you enjoy visiting the most? |
Poll Results: Last newsletter we asked if you had ever been to Lollapalooza and 61% of you said that you have not. Did you happen to see the viral video of how many people attended Chappell Roan’s Lolla performance?!

Today's Sunset in Chicago
The sun will set in Chicago this evening at 7:59pm. This means the sun sets today nine minutes earlier than it did last week. As mentioned above, it also ends our steak of sunsets after 8pm.
