Chicago News
Centennial Fountain: With so many important people in town this week, Chicago decided to get some items on its to-do list completed. For the first time since 2020, the Centennial Fountain is back on in Chicago! This historic fountain is located on the Chicago Riverwalk and is equipped with a cannon that shoots a water arc over the Chicago River. It turned off four years ago after flooding damaged its control panel. The cannon shoots off with a five-minute water display at the top of each hour.
The Wabash Lights: On the topic of city improvements due to the DNC, Chicago’s newest interactive public arts project The Wabash Lights is now also up and running. A literal glow-up you might say! These new LED lights sit underneath the L tracks in the Loop at Wabash and Monroe. This first 50 feet of lights was Phase 1 of the project, and they are currently fundraising for Phase 2 to complete the entire block.
Chicago National Anthem: Stephen Colbert has been in town this week for the DNC (we saw a DNC motorcade last night btw) filming live shows and making the most of his time in Chicago. You have to watch the video that his team put out titled The Chicago National Anthem starring Stephen Colbert, Jason Sudeikis, Sean Hayes, Nick Offerman, Jennifer Hudson and others.
Chicago River Swim: Do you remember how there was supposed to be the first ever Chicago River Swim in the heart of the Chicago River this September? Well, change of plans. The permit was denied due to safety concerns. Guess the Chicago River’s glow-up isn’t fully complete yet. Now the event will take place in Lake Michigan from Ohio Street Beach. The swimmers will still meet on the Riverwalk but just to take a boat out to the lake.
Backyard Sports: It was just announced this week that the beloved computer game franchise Backyard Sports, from every Millennial’s childhood, is returning with the same aesthetic of the games released over 20 years ago. Get nostalgic with this hype video. Chicago’s own Caitlin Hendricks got national attention by figuring out what was happening and breaking the news through a series of videos over the last 10 days. They rewarded her with her own character.

PSL Season: You could say that fall unofficially begins today as the fall menu is now available in Starbucks stores. If you are wondering if this is earlier than normal, the answer is yes. It’s the earliest ever that they have launched their fall menu, but it’s only two days earlier than last year. The Summerween trend is catching on apparently.
Chicago Snorkel: Have you ever had a Chicago Snorkel before? We are guessing you haven’t. Take a guess at what it is before clicking the previous link. Could you do it?! Let’s see how the originator handled it.
Simone Biles: You have probably heard by this point that Simone Biles’ husband Jonathan Owens now plays for the Chicago Bears. She was in town for his game last weekend (wearing a Packers jacket) and they even went out on a date at a popular Chicago restaurant where they gave her a custom menu with a special message.
Chick-fil-A: Does today mark the future of the fast-food drive-thru industry? It’s possible! Chick-fil-A is set to open its first two-story, four-lane “elevated drive-thru” today in the company’s home state of Georgia. You have to see it.
Poll Question of the Week
Did you play any of the Backyard Sports games as a kid?Which was best: Backyard Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball, Hockey, etc. |
Poll Results: Last newsletter we asked if you have ever been to Six Flags Great America in the Chicago suburbs and 71% of you said that you have been. Two of your favorite rides were Raging Bull and Superman.

Today's Sunset in Chicago
The sun will set in Chicago this evening at 7:39pm. This means the sun sets today 10 minutes earlier than it did last week.
